Problems with Your Battery

When your vehicle won’t start, the first thing to consider is that it might be your battery. If you can get it jump-started, you can bring it to the service department at Victory Chevrolet. We’ll test the battery and let you know if it needs to be replaced.

The main reasons for the vehicle not starting are the battery has been drained by leaving a light or other battery-draining feature on or the battery is too old to hold a charge. Sometimes, it’s not the battery at all but another component of your starter system. That’s why we test the battery first, and then we look at the spark plugs, starter, alternator, fuses, and ignition switch. Once we find the problem, we’ll provide you with a written estimate for repairs.

Reasons a Battery Won’t Hold a Charge

If your battery needs to be jumped more than once or twice, you’ll want to start looking at the reason why. Here are some reasons your battery may fail to hold a charge:

  • The battery is at the end of its life, which can be detected with a simple test.
  • Something is continually draining the battery, which could be a light left on or the door is unable to close.
  • There may be corrosion around the terminals, which prevents a good connection from the battery to the cables.
  • Faulty wiring. If the cables are connected securely, the wires themselves may be damaged.
  • The alternator may have gone bad, which keeps draining the battery.
  • Other parts of the starter system may have failed or not be working correctly.

Servicing Your Battery

If you notice any of the following signs, you should bring your vehicle in for service.

  • Vehicle is sluggish to start or doesn’t start without a jump.
  • The lights dim when you start the engine or are driving down the highway. Other components may not work correctly as well, such as the radio or heater.
  • The battery is new or in good health, but it keeps getting drained.

You can count on the service team at Victory Chevrolet to diagnose the issue and get it fixed. If the battery needs to be replaced, our parts department has a full stock of batteries from the major manufacturers. We’ll help you decide which battery you need for your vehicle.

You can schedule service online or give us a call to make an appointment to have your battery checked out. We provide a comfortable waiting area for you to relax while we look at your battery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Battery Service

Generally, a car battery can last between three and five years, but there are many factors that can influence the longevity of a battery. Beginning with the quality of the battery, some batteries are just built better and are designed to last longer. Other factors include the climate you live in, your driving habits, and how often you drive the vehicle.

Additionally, if you are intentional about keeping your vehicle maintained, like regular battery checks, cleaning your battery terminals and connectors, your battery will last longer. If your battery has been in use for three or more years, you’ll want to bring it in to have it checked with a voltmeter to verify its health. If you have had it for five years or longer, consider replacing it to avoid being stranded with a dead battery.

One of the most major battery killers is called a parasitic draw. This happens when your vehicle’s electrical system continues to draw power when it is turned off. It can happen because you left the headlights or dome lights on or left a door slightly ajar so the dome light stays on, but there are also situations that can cause this parasitic draw that can only be diagnosed when inspected by certified, professional mechanics.

A corroded connection is another problem. This occurs when terminals or cables become damaged or corroded and lead to a loss of power. Another problem that can arise is related to other components in your electrical system that are failing, like the alternator which charges your battery when you drive.

Here are some signs that can indicate it’s time for a new battery:

  • Car doesn’t start: Batteries don’t last forever, and in time they will no longer have a power yield sufficient to keep your electrical features functioning, including your starter and starter relay. If this happens your vehicle may not start.
  • Dashboard warning light: If your dashboard instruments or lights come on to warn you about a battery problem or low battery charge, you’ll need a mechanic to run some tests to determine where the problem lies.
  • Electrical features fail to function: If there are electrical systems and/or features that no longer work like your security system, it may require a new battery.

Your battery life can be extended through regular maintenance and annual inspections. A few steps that you can take:

  • Clean the battery terminals periodically.
  • Have the battery’s charge levels tested.
  • Have your alternator inspected to ensure it is functioning well.
  • Try to limit the frequency of shorter trips that do not allow the alternator to charge the battery.
  • Limit the use of electronics when the engine is not running.
