How Do Rotors Work?
If your brake rotors are doing their job, they spin on the hub of the wheels as they turn. This provides a smooth surface for your brake pads to grip, and that is what slows you down. If your rotor has been damaged from friction heat, it can warp. If your brake pads are worn too much, they can carve grooves into the rotor and your brake pads will be less efficient and may even be dangerous. If not addressed properly, rotor problems can lead to much greater repair expenses later on.
How Do I Know If My Rotors Need Servicing?
If your rotors need service, three telltale signs can clue you in to problems with them:
- Noise: Squeaking or squealing noises can mean your rotors are warped or worn. If the rotors are severely worn, they may make an unpleasant grinding sound. A brake inspection can diagnose whether the noise is emanating from the pads, the rotors, or both.
- Vibrations: Unusual vibrations in your brake pedal or steering wheel when you brake can be indicative of a rough or grooved rotor surface, and your brake pads will not make good contact with your rotors, leading to skipping or vibrating that will manifest when you apply your brakes.
- Visual Clues: Many cars require you to remove your tires before you can get a good look at your rotors, but others with tire rims that have open spokes allow you to view the rotors through the spokes. When you do your own visual inspection, you’ll want to look for imperfections like grooves or perhaps a bluish tinge in certain areas. This blue cast is an indicator of heat damage which can warp your rotors.
How Often Do I Need Rotor Service?
Brake rotors can wear out as soon as 30,000 miles or as late as 70,000 miles. The way you drive and the environment you drive in can cause problems with both your brake pads and your rotors. Stop-and-go traffic, the weight of your vehicle, the quality of the parts on the vehicle and other factors can affect the integrity of your pads and rotors and their longevity.
